HR Professionals

A Social Network for HR folks to connect, share knowledge and learn.

Many tools have been used to cultivate a creative workforce. An individual organization will have its own special needs, which means you’ll have to customize to your location. When it comes to creativity, one size does not fit all.
For me, the best approach is to delegate with wide-open parameters and then gently assist the person in finding the solution. Sometimes, the person will fail, but that’s okay. The more this happens, the more creative the person becomes, until, finally, you have someone who constantly uses creative thinking. You have someone who enjoys going to work each day. You have someone who feels that he or she is contributing to a greater team effort. You have someone who is loyal. In fact, you may have helped to mold a person who will one day be your boss. That is a great thing, too.
Maybe this approach is not your cup of tea. Nevertheless, find an approach or system that generates creativity in others. Quit pushing paper around your desk. Your employer will thank you. The employee will thank you. Moreover, you will have more time to study how you’re going to spend your new raise. This tends to work for me but everyone has their favorite way to encourage creativity in others. What say you? www.michaellgooch.com

Hi,
I agree that to encourage innovation you have to provide freedom, both for ideation as well as execution. Also, an environment of open communication has to be created where failures are not looked down upon as long as the intentions meant well.
It is also said that creativity thrives in chaos and that the creative type love eccentric ways. Create such a culture in the organization where there is no pressure to fit in the "professional stereotype" and encourage different opinions and ways of living.
And of course, fostering creativity does not mean disregarding process adherence at all.
