When the hunter becomes the hunted

(Ref - ET report citing the growing demand for Head hunters.) Having a lot of free time on your hands gives you the opportunity to do so much that you would have otherwise not done - surf the net, hone your typing skills, read blogs and post them, and when your eyeballs are about to pop out after having stared at a computer screen for hours you can always soothe them with cool water and a change of type font by reading the newspaper. Today's session ended with yours truly scanning the ET for a… Continue

The Murky truth of Office Politics

Office Politics. That necessary evil without which people feel that existence is not possible in an office environment. A kind of drug that corrupts and corrupts absolutely. Ethics?Values? Are you speaking in Greek by any chance? People play games, and then get entangled in their own webs. They get stuck in their own convoluted lies. What lies beneath is a basic human need - security. The feeling of being secure when threatened spawns enough venom to destroy any sense of self that may exist wi… Continue

Lost in Transition

Lost - a little bit of self that was part of the necessary self esteem, a little bit of me that helped me hold my head higher, a little bit of my soul that trusted and felt that it belonged, a bit of my heart that admired and felt at home. It seems as if its gone forever. If u find it let me know - I'd like to put my heart and soul back together again. Continue

Ways of the world

Since I’m new at this, I am simply copying and pasting this here. Imagine if this started happening in India. How would people react? It’s a well know n fact that people in India spend more than half their work days in highly Unproductive tasks. E.g. Married employees discussing home affairs with their partners over the phone, water cooler conferences, extended lunch hours, etc, etc. for anyone who’s interested, the URL is provided at the end. Does Your Boss Have to Pay You While You Wait foContinue

Coping with Retrenchment / Lay offs – a beginner’s guide.

After a hard day of convincing inflated egos about why they should be joining the organization that you work for, the last thing that you want to do is pick up a call from an old batch mate whom you don’t really like. I picked it up anyway, a sense of duty especially since I’m in HR didn’t allow me to screen the call. I kid you not when I say that the voice at the other end of the line wasn’t exactly chirpy. It was downright depressed. And I’d be a completely callous fool to expect it to be any… Continue

Management by exception – a rather interesting concept

B – School teaches you a lot of things, but probably the most interesting ones don’t really hit you in the face until they actually happen to you. Management by exception is a concept that we learnt as a part of strategic management, Operations management and even in HR way back in the first semester. To be honest, most of us didn’t exactly take that concept very seriously. All we did was cram the flowchart that explained the process and regurgitated it in the exam. Case closed. I mean who actu… Continue

Respecting the fine dividing line between HR , administration and IR

There is always a huge gap between what they teach you in class and what you actually end up learning on the job. For some reason text books always end up promoting that HR is an entity unto itself. Not that I believe that it isn't but I wish that my superiors at work would too. The department I work in is labelled HR & Admin. More admin than HR actually. But somehow everyone tags themselves HR. On the other hand any thing that the department does is an HR activity. Since when does applyin… Continue

Jet Airways - an HR guy's nightmare

While the world rejoices in the fact that Jet Airways has taken back the retrenched employees I'd like all my fellow HR people to spare a thought for the HR guys at Jet who would probably be the only outlet that the employees would have to vent thier ire. I mean disgruntled employees shout at us for everything, from the fact the cafeteria serves crap to the point that their pay hasn't been credited, HR are the fall guys. Adding insult to the injury is the fact that the employees have not had a… Continue
